Dental implants are small rod-like posts that act as a base for replacement teeth. They are placed into the jawbone and act like roots to support a tooth, denture or bridge.
The implant fits into the bone and carries an abutment onto which the crown fits. Titanium is the usual material because it is biocompatible and bonds readily with new bone. With good oral hygiene and regular reviews, implants can last for many years.
Treatment options
Where conditions allow, the implant can be placed the same day the tooth is removed.
The implant is placed at the same time as the tooth is extracted, then allowed to heal under the gum for around three months or longer — healing takes longer if grafting or tissue reconstruction is needed. Once healed, the crown is fitted.
When enough stability is achieved during surgery, a temporary tooth can be fitted straight away. Bonding of the implant to the bone takes around 2–3 months, so biting pressure should be kept low during this time before the final crown is attached.
Step by step
The tooth is removed and the socket cleaned so it is free from infection or debris before the implant is placed.
We assess the bone to decide whether the implant can be placed straight away — with or without extra tissue support — or after the socket heals.
A bone graft may be needed if the socket is fragile or larger than the implant; a gum graft can thicken thin gums. These are usually handled in the same visit.
Once the implant has integrated, the crown is fitted — shaped and shaded to match your natural teeth.
The same approach is followed. Your dentist will assess risk factors and whether grafting is required before placing the implant.
